The Inline-Six Engine: A Dying Breed
The inline-six cylinder engine is gradually being replaced with the more compact V-arrangement. I would not be surprised to see the inline-6 leave the petrol-engine’d passenger car arena entirely, and only be reserved for diesel work vehicles.
However, they will always hold a special place in my heart, because nothing sounds quite like a straight six. With their natural mechanical balance and great exhaust note, let’s take a minute to remember just a few of these excellent engines.
- TVR Speed Six
- BMW S50B32
- Nissan S20
- Jaguar XK6
- Nissan RB26DETT
- Toyota 1JZ-GTE
- Nissan L28 / OS Giken TC-24 B1

Long live the straight six!
They’re an endangered species, don’t let them go extinct!!!
